Cycling Routes in Alkmaar and Region
Cycling route Natuurlijk Noord-Holland
Alkmaar is and remains Holland’s cheese city, but that title only tells part of the story. For years, Alkmaar has been one of the best shopping cities in the Netherlands. As you wander past the monuments, you’ll be amazed by the beauty of the old city centre. Castricum offers an expansive polder landscape with authentic windmills, characteristic farmhouses and historic buildings.
Cycling route along land, sea and museums
Broek op Langedijk is best known for its cultivation of white cabbage and its auction, which has now been transformed into an auction museum. In the Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar you’ll find old paintings, but also toy and silver collections. This isn’t the only museum: the Dutch Cheese Museum, the Beer Museum and the Beatles Museum can also be found here. For lovers of both museums and nature, this is a wonderful route.
The best village in the Netherlands and more
“The best village in the Netherlands” – this honorary title wasn’t given by us, but by the famous hydraulic engineer Leeghwater, who already called De Rijp that. Get off your bike and take a walk through this village with its Dutch gabled houses, the church with stained-glass windows and the Town Hall with its weigh house. In Driehuizen you’ll now find 28 houses, each one picture-postcard worthy. Grootschermer also boasts picturesque houses, a church and windmills.
Cycling through Alkmaar and the Schoorl dunes
Explore the charming courtyards of Alkmaar, cycle along the old canals and discover its narrow streets. Explore the surroundings and enjoy the stunning view over the North Sea offered by the Schoorl Dunes, once you’ve found your way through the Schoorl forestry area. A perfect place to clear your head on the bike – in the high dunes and ancient forests of Schoorl.
Bergen, Egmond aan de Hoef en Alkmaar
Discover Alkmaar’s charming narrow streets, beautiful courtyards and historic canals, and learn all about what makes the city unique: cheese! Explore the “Cheese City” with its historic centre, which includes no fewer than 700 municipal monuments and 339 national monuments. Visit the cheese market and the cheese museum, or venture out into the surrounding nature. Near Bergen, you’ll even find a beautiful old park forest.
From Alkmaar into the polder
The historic heart of Alkmaar is best explored by bike. From the city, you can easily cycle straight into the wide-open polder landscape towards the Alkmaardermeer and Uitgeestermeer. In the polder, you’ll ride through a typically Dutch landscape of meadows, ditches and wide skies. In this surprisingly quiet area you can look far into the distance. You’ll pass the Noordermolen, dating back to 1589, and a little further on the corn mill “De Oude Knegt”.
Alkmaar, Camperduin en Schoorldam
The Schoorl Dunes not only offer stunning views of the North Sea, but also show you parts of Alkmaar and Bergen and lead you through a wide landscape of fields, dunes and forests. The heathlands found here are unique in combination with the dunes. Nowhere in the Netherlands are the dunes wider or higher than here.
ReCycling in Alkmaar
The major cycling event once took place in Alkmaar. From 7 to 11 August 2019, this beautiful city hosted the European Championships. With polder, forest, beach and dunes just around the corner, this is a paradise for cyclists. Will you hop on your bike and admire the beauty of Alkmaar and its surroundings yourself?
