Werk mee aan het wandkleed

Starting June 14, the unique art project *Draden van ons Nederlandse slavenverleden* (Threads of our Dutch Slavery Past) begins at the Grote Kerk Alkmaar. In workshops throughout North Holland, residents are collaborating on a monumental tapestry measuring 35 x 2.5 meters, designed by Raul Balai. The design is based on historical research into the province's colonial and slavery past and the traces of it that are still visible today.

During the making days, participants work together on parts of the tapestry using various textile techniques. Each city makes its own contribution to the whole, in which local history, personal stories, and collaborative research come together in textiles. Everyone is welcome to participate, with or without experience. There is room to learn, experiment, meet each other, and reflect together on this shared past.

The project investigates how North Holland was connected to the VOC, WIC, shipping, trade, and colonial economies. Cities such as Amsterdam, Hoorn, Haarlem, Alkmaar, Purmerend, and Den Helder benefited directly or indirectly from a system of trade, exploitation, and slavery. The global exploitation of people, animals, and nature takes center stage in Raul Balai's design. The tapestry shows how colonial ideas—focused on ownership, profit, and the concept of controllability—have left deep traces in the society of then and now.

The finished tapestry will travel through the province and invite visitors to meet, talk, and reflect.
